Summer Soon

When we moved to 118 Henry Street 8 years ago September, there was almost no grass in the backyard. The elderly couple P.O.’s (Previous Owners) had done little to rake the leaves from almost 3 dozen trees and, in general, let the yard go wild. Within the first couple of years, we cut down all but 11 of the trees and have obsessively kept the leaves up so that grass will grow.

As a land management strategy, every 2 years we let the back yard go to seed and don’t cut the grass until the first round of seeds is falling off the stalks. This year was the designated year, and with all the good rain and cool temps, the yard went jungle. We kept a track cleared to the tree house for DeShawn.

None of this was grass 8 years ago

We’re closing in on 100% grass coverage, up from about 30%, by just keeping the autumn leaves off and a little strategic (un)mowing.

The grass was about 2 feet tall

We have a smidge over a 1/2 acre to mow, all parts of the yard combined. It takes about an 1 1/2 hours with a push mower. A short, funny story about the day we brought the mower home is buried in this post.

The big news of the weekend was the crash of our server…more about this later. Needless to say, it was more fun to mow the grass then to work for 2 days on the Henry Street network.
